Netflix established its shopping site this summer, allowing fans to buy apparel, accessories, and other lifestyle items inspired by their favorite episodes, such as “Stranger Things.” Hulu is following in this direction with Shop Hulu, a Disney-owned streaming service, tasked with providing limited-edition collections of apparel and lifestyle products from Hulu Originals and other titles in the company’s on-demand library, as well as Hulu-branded merch. For the first time, Hulu’s yearly release of “Ugly Holiday Sweaters” will be available for purchase on the site.
In 2019, Hulu began giving away its ugly sweaters as a promotional incentive to random viewers. Last year, Hulu converted the giveaway into a sweepstake, granting people the chance to win one of the sweaters, which included Hulu shows such as “Little Fires Everywhere,” “Shrill,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and others. The company’s Christmas sweaters for 2021 will be available for purchase starting Tuesday, November 30.
“Love, Victor,” “Solar Opposites,” “The Great,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and “Wu-Tang: An American Saga” are among the films on the bill this year, with many of them have performed well in prior years. Unlike Netflix, which invested in its online store as a new arm of its bigger retail business, Hulu’s most popular product line is intended to collect money for charity. According to Hulu, 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the Ugly Holiday Sweater collection, minus taxes and shipping fees, will be given to Feeding America through December 31.
Outside of its philanthropic fundraising endeavor for the holidays, Hulu’s shop will continue to feature other products throughout the year. When the show’s holiday special begins on November 22, fans of “Solar Opposites” will be able to purchase shirts, glasses, stickers, and more. According to the firm, the collection was created in partnership with Executive Producers Mike McMahan, Justin Roiland, and Josh Bycel.
Household items and apparel from shows such as “The Orville,” “Wu-Tang: An American Saga” (select items from Mitchell & Ness’ capsule collection are available), and themed merchandise from acquired shows such as “Grey’s Anatomy,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” “American Horror Story,” and “What We Do In The Shadows,” among others, are also available. Hulu will give customers a discount if they join up for its email, and it expects to provide special deals throughout the year, beginning with Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
